From tropical gardens, islands and coastline to towering skyscrapers that illuminate the night, Singapore is a city of jaw-dropping sights. Locals have made the best of the views on offer with some brilliant bars. Here are a few of the best.
Spago Bar & Lounge
Spago is the more sophisticated neighbour to crowd-puller Ce La Vi, and offers the ultimate Marina Bay Sands rooftop experience. Fifty-seven floors up, it has panoramic views across the hotel’s infinity pool towards the CBD on one side, and across Gardens by the Bay and Singapore Strait on the other. The fit-out is all open-air lounge, with comfy banquette seating, plantation shutters and plenty of greenery. For drinks, there’s a selection of both classic and signature cocktails, an enormous Euro-leaning wine list that covers all price points and includes a bunch of Coravin options, and beers. There’s also bottle service available for those keen to make a night of it. It’s a great spot to go long on drinks while snacking away on chicken laksa spring rolls, chicken karaage brioche sangas and spicy scallop sushi rolls.
Not every sky bar in Singapore is all cocktails and wine. Level 33 bills itself as the “world’s highest brewpub” and is a lovely, laid-back spot. You can eat here, or just stop in for a beer or two on the balcony, which has a rare outlook straight down Marina Bay, with Marina Bay Sands on your right and the city high-rises to the left. The beers lean towards the European styles that are popular in Singapore, the core list featuring a blond lager, a wheat beer, a porter, a stout and an IPA. Away from the beers, Level 33 boasts an innovative wine list that focuses on organic, vegan and small-producer wines from Australia, France and Italy. There’s also an approachable menu of bar eats –like slipper lobster rolls, oyster mushroom skewers and Wagyu burgers – to keep you there for another round.
Found a whopping 70 floors up, atop the sleek Swissôtel The Stamford, Skai Bar has views overlooking Fort Canning Park in the west, right around to the CBD in the south and then Marina Bay Sands in the south-east. Drinks here lean heavily into wine on the back of a partnership with Penfolds, the cellar covering both old- and new-world vino, backed by signature cocktails and a long spirits list. There’s also a classy food menu that features dishes such as crab tagliatelle with egg yolk and smoked roe, and Westholme Wagyu flat iron steak served with a house salad and Asian spices. The fit-out is all striking timber features, plush carpet and low-key lounge seating, with enormous windows to make the most of those views.
It’s easy to forget about the Singapore rooftop bars that aren’t perched atop a gleaming skyscraper or hotel. Southbridge sits just five floors above the popular Boat Quay river walk, but provides views of the grand old parliament buildings just across the Singapore River and the orange rooftops of the heritage shophouses that line the quay down towards the CBD. It’s an up-close and personal take on the city, and is often populated by ex-pats and workers from the nearby office towers. The drinks menu is relatively simple and cocktail-heavy, with fruity creations such as the Tropical Sunrise (tequila blanco, passionfruit juice, kaffir lime) and Spice Trade (white rum, elderflower liqueur, rose essence and apple juice) suiting the al fresco setting. Elsewhere, there’s a tight wine and beer list, with bar food revolving around oysters prepped four ways and one-handed eats such as sliders and tacos.
The ultimate place to watch the sun set, the open-air Mr Stork sits 39 floors up on the rooftop of the Andaz Singapore. This is a fabulous, green-thumbed venue, its collection of teepees set among tree-lined gardens and hedgerows. You have views in every direction up here, and from an unusual vantage point given the hotel’s Kampong Gelam location, north-east of the city centre. Drinks are balanced between an internationally-minded wine list, fresh and fragrant cocktails (including four on tap) and Seedlip non-alcoholic cocktails. For food, there are elevated bar eats such as chilli lobster crab bao, Impossible beef sliders and Korean fried chicken.
Not all Singapore bars with a view are in the guts of town. Dusk’s open-air location amid the lush slopes of Mount Faber lend it a fabulous outlook over Sentosa, the resort island off the city’s southern coast, and the hundreds of container ships and bulk carriers waiting to dock at its famous port (a cable car to the island departs just next door to Dusk). As the name suggests, hit this spot at sunset, before dinner, when the scenery is backdropped by a glowing sky. Dusk leans hard into its cocktail list, which features nitro-frosted numbers to help you cool down after a long day exploring the city, but there’s also plenty of beer, cider and chilled sake, and a lengthy, thoughtfully curated (and keenly priced) wine list. Food is a French-influenced mix of share plates and main meals – think oven-roasted poulet, cote de boeuf and baked-shell escargot.
